Why Machinery Shipments Go Wrong

Industrial equipment is among the most demanding cargo a forwarder can handle. A single mistake in planning or execution can turn a six-figure asset into scrap metal before it ever reaches the installation site. The four failure points we see most often:

Weight and Dimension Risk

Machines rarely fit standard containers. A vertical machining centre may exceed door height; a press line may weigh more than a 40-foot container's payload rating. Misjudging axle loads on inland trucking or crane capacities at the terminal leads to refused bookings, re-handling fees and days of delay.

Out-of-Gauge Complexity

Oversized cargo requires flat-rack or open-top units, lashing engineering, terminal pre-advice and often special stowage on board. Each step adds coordination points — and each coordination point is a place where an inexperienced forwarder loses control.

Corrosion in Transit

A 30-day ocean crossing exposes bare machined surfaces to salt-laden air and condensation cycles inside the container. Without VCI (volatile corrosion inhibitor) protection, desiccants and proper sealing, precision surfaces arrive oxidised — and warranty claims follow.

Insurance Gaps

Standard carrier liability is calculated by weight, not value. For a USD 500,000 injection moulding machine, that formula leaves the shipper exposed to catastrophic loss. Many consignments travel under-insured simply because nobody flagged the gap at booking time.

  • Pre-shipment survey: We confirm dimensions, centre of gravity, lifting points and load-spreading requirements — then select the right equipment type (standard, open-top, flat-rack or breakbulk).
  • Export crating and lashing: ISPM-15 compliant timber crating, welded sea-fastening on flat-racks, and lashing plans calculated against IMO cargo-securing standards.
  • Rust prevention programme: VCI film wrapping, silica-gel desiccant placement and container sealing matched to the transit duration and destination climate.
  • All-risk cargo insurance: Institute Cargo Clauses (A) coverage arranged at full declared value, with claims support handled by our own team — not passed to a third party.
  • Heavy-lift coordination: Crane scheduling, low-loader trucking and route surveys for oversized pieces, coordinated directly with the terminal from our Ningbo office.

Because our operators sit port-side at Ningbo-Zhoushan, we supervise loading personally and resolve terminal issues in hours, not days.
